Western University at Quindaro, selected newspaper clippings, 1881-1962 / Collected and photocopied by the Kansas State Historical Society. 1881-1962.

Western University was established in 1857 as Freedmen's University. In 1872, the Kansas Legislature made an appropriation to support a Normal School at Quindaro to be known as Colored Normal School at Quindaro. In 1877 the founder of university died and the university was adopted by the African Methodist Church and the name was changed to Western University. In 1899, 15 acres of land was deeded from the University to the State of Kansas for the development of a state funded and controlled Industrial Department. The remainder of the university was funded by privately. In 1943, the state moved the Industrial Dept. to the Kansas Vocational School in Topeka. The land reverted back to Western University.
